A huge first quarter run by the Perkins-Tryon Lady Demons served as a springboard that resulted in a 51-30 win over the Luther Lady Lions to garner the Area I regional tournament consolation bracket plaque Saturday afternoon at the P-T Gymnasium.
The Lady Demons will advance to area tournament play that begins later today. P-T will play Tishomingo at 6:30 p. m. at Del City High School.
P-T used the long ball in jumping out to the early lead against Luther. Four three-point goals were scored with two coming from Rylee Craycraft and one each from Raegan O'Donnell and Bailey Wensler. Luther's lone goal came with just over six minutes left in the quarter for the 18-2 score.
The scoring soured for the Lady Demons in the second period as one a free throw from Craycraft was logged with 6:09 left. Luther countered with 11 points but trailed 19-13 at halftime.
Inside buckets by Brianna Hobbs sandwiched a trey from O'Donnell to balloon the P-T lead to 26-13 with 5:24 left in the third quarter. Luther used free throw shooting as an ally to keep within striking distance. The Lady Lions hit 7-of-8 attempts to counter the lone field goal scored in the final second to trail 32-22.
P-T put the game away early in the fourth quarter with free throws from Wensler and Jeri Adkism plus a three-pointer from Adkism to push the margin back to 16 points at 38-22. The Lady Demons then used more free throws later in the period to extend the lead for the eventual win. In the fourth quarter alone, P-T hit 14-of-19 charity shots.
Hobbs led P-T in scoring with 12 points with Craycraft following with 11. Adkism chipped in 10.
24-9 advantage. After three charity shots for the Lions, Thunder Sharp was joined by brother Talon for a 7-2 run to lead 31-14 with just over two minutes left. P-T led at halftime 31-18.
Both teams used short scoring runs to jockey for position. The Lions used theirs to close the gap to single digits while the Demons' were used to extend it back to a comfortable margin. P-T led 41-30 at the end of the third quarter.
Most of the fourth quarter saw the teams trade buckets with the Demons maintaining the advantage that eventually resulted in the 58-45 win.
The brothers Sharp notched 15 points each to lead all scorers. Matt Waitt chipped in 10.
While the Demons outscored Oklahoma Christian School in each quarter last Friday afternoon, it was the second period that served as a springboard toward a 53-41 win.
P-T used a 6-0 run to balloon its lead to a game-high 14 points that eventually kept the Saints at bay. The buckets were scored by Thunder Sharp, Travis Cotton, and Hayden McBride to gain the 32-18 advantage nearly 90 seconds in the the frame. P-T had constructed a 26-18 advantage at halftime.
OCS managed to close to within five points after a 12-3 run the trail 35-30 with 1:10 left. However, a layup by Zach Bledsoe and a halfcourt heave just before the end of the period by McBride boosted the PT lead back to double digits at 40-30.
The Demons sealed the win with a 9-3 run in the final three minutes of the game.
McBride led all scorers with 17 points. Talon Sharp followed with 12 and Cotton chipped in 11.
Despite leading early in the game, the Demons dropped a 61-49 decision to the Oklahoma Centennial Bison 61-49 in winner's bracket semifinals action Thursday night.
P-T last led 8-5 before the Bison went on a run for a 19-17 lead after the first quarter. Centennial scored the first eight points of the second period to extended the margin to 10 at 27-17. P-T managed to trip a portion of the deficit at halftime to 34-27.
Centennial outscored the Demons 27-22 in the second half including hitting 6-of-11 free throws for the win.
Thunder Sharp led the Demons in scoring with 16 points.
