Gorham, others playing hoops next week

Perkins-Tryon basketball standout Jordan Gorham will play her final high school game next week as part of the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State activities in Tulsa.

Gorham will be part of the Small East team who will play their counterparts from the Small West at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mabee Center on the campus of Oral Roberts University. The large school game will follow at around 8:30 p.m.

Gorham, who will continue her basketball career at Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond, helped lead the Lady Demons to the Class 3A state runner-up finish with a 28-1 record. As a four-year starter, P-T also recorded back-to-back state semifinals appearances her sophomore and junior seasons.

She is also one of 12 baseball All-Staters to come from P-T and the sixth to earn both OCA and Oklahoma Girls' Basketball Coaches Association honors. Previous recipients were Susie Hughes (1970), Linda Parrack (1978), Kati Arthur and Kari Willingham (1995), Jessica Brown (1997), Loretta Ledford (2003), Courtney Bayhylle (2007), Liberty Payne (2008), Meredith Treat (2009), and Justice Payne (2010). McKenzie Stanford also earned OGBCA All-State honors this year.

Ledford, Bayhylle, Liberty and Justice Payne, and Treat were both OCA and OGBCA All-Staters.

Three area basketball standouts will be playing in the OCA Boys' All-State games on Thursday, Aug. 1, also at the Mabee Center. The small schools game will also start at 7 p.m. with the big schools following at around 8:30 p.m.

The Coyle Bluejackets will be represented by Tony Aska and Eric Harris and they will play on the Small West squad. The pair helped lead the Bluejackets to the Class B state tournament championship runnerup.

Glencoe's Kagan Castleberry will be on the Small East squad. Castleberry and his teammates won the Class A state championship defeating Weleetka in the title game.

Stillwater's Rico Thompson will be on the Large East team. Thompson helped lead the Pioneers throughout the season with his 18 points per game average. His scoring mark increased during the post-season around 25 points per game.
