Perkins-Tryon used big innings in each of last Thursday's Class 3A district tournament games against the Meeker Bulldogs to claim the championship and move on to regional action that starts today.

The first big inning lifted the Demons to a 9-4 win in the first game while the second turned into a late rally for a 8-6 verdict in the nightcap.

P-T, now 19-11 for the season, will be in regional tournament action at Verdigris. P-T will play Pawhuska in the second game starting at approximately 1 p.m.

As the visiting team in the opener, P-T scored a single run in the top of the first inning when Shelby Reese reached on a two-out infield base hit and later scored on a Brady Davis single to left field. Then came the first big inning.

Ryan Richards began the top of the second with a single to left field. It would be the first of seven P-T hits in the inning. Richards went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Dillon Longbrake Matt Waitt would outrun the throw after a bunt but the throw went wide of the first baseman and Richards would score.

Waitt later scored on Tanner Bridenstine's double to left-centerfield. Shelby Reese followed with a single up the middle to advance Bridenstine who would later cross the plate after Tanner Bane singled to left field. Reese later scored on a wild pitch for a 5-0 margin.

After Davis earned a walk, Alex Dougan singled to score Bane to increase the margin to 6-0. Davis walked, Alex Dougan would single, before Austin Nietenhoefer followed with a single that would load the bases. Longbrake followed with a walk that scored Davis. Courtesy runner Zeke Dougan, running for older brother Alex, capped the scoring when he reached home on an infield error after Waitt's hit a ground ball. That would comfortably give the Demons an 8-0 advantage.

Meeker countered with a respectable surge in the bottom of the frame by scoring four runs and trimming the margin to 8-4.

P-T's final run came in the top of the third when Reese led off with a single to left field then went to second base when the ball was mishandled. One out later, Davis lobbed a single to score right field that scored Reese for what proved to be the 9-4 final score.

Both teams hit the ball well offensively to combine for 27 hits with P-T accounting for 15 of them. Reese went 4-for-5 and with three runs scored to lead the Demons offensively.

Bane pitched his way to the complete game win giving up four runs on 12 hits and two walks. He did leave 10 Bulldog runners stranded on base and logged eight strikeouts.

In the second game, the Demons found themselves trailing before ending the shutout bid at the midway point. Meeker scored a single run in the top of the second inning then added three more in the fourth.

P-T cut the defi cit in half in the bottom of the frame thanks to RBI hits from Bane and Nietenhoefer for the 4-2 score.

The bottom of the sixth was P-T's big inning in this game. Six runs were plated on only four hits plus a Meeker error. A walk and a hit batsman also figured into the equation. The inning started big for P-T as singles by Bane, Davis, and Alex Dougan would load the bases.

The tide shifted briefly for Meeker as two quick strikeouts were notched. But it returned to the Demons when Longbrake was hit by a pitch to score Bane and Waitt walked to score Davis to forge a 4-4 tie. Bridenstine reached on a two-base error that scored Dougan and Longbrake to give P-T its first lead of 6-4.

Reese followed with a critical two-run single that plated Waitt and Bridenstine and give the Demons an 8-4 advantage.

But Meeker wasn't finished. Two walks given up by P-T pitcher Longbrake and an infield error loaded the bases for the Bulldogs. P-T would then concede a run to get an out on a grounder to second baseman Davis for the first one of the inning. Another walk would prompt a P-T pitching change and Waitt was called in from centerfield.

Waitt surrendered the fourth P-T walk in the inning to score another Meeker run. He followed that with two straight strikeouts to end the game and leave the bases loaded for Meeker.

Longbrake was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Zeke Dougan. Waitt recorded his first save of the season.

P-T scattered nine hits with Bane and Alex Dougan notched two each.

The Demons finished the regular season with a commanding 11-4 win at Hennessey last Monday.

P-T held a 3-2 lead after two innings of play. Both teams plated two runs each in the fifth frame with the Demons holding on to a 5-4 advantage. The game, however, was put away in the sixth with a five-run outburst sparked by a two-run double by Brady Davis.

An extra insurance run was added in the seventh. Matt Waitt led the Demons at the plate with a blistering 4-of-5 performance with a run batted in and three runs scored. Waitt doubled in the second inning and followed with three singles.

Austin Nietenhoefer was the winning pitcher in 5.2 innings of work. He gave up the four runs on nine hits and a walk. Nietenhoefer did notch two strike outs.
