City Commission says "It Can Wait"

The City of Perkins has proclaimed today, Sept. 19, as "Drive 4 Pledges Day" in the City of Perkins, a show of support for AT&T's "It Can Wait" campaign.

"There is no text message so important as to risk your life, so we hope everyone in the City of Perkins will support this effort and take the pledge," said Mayor Robert Johnson. "We applaud AT&T for its work to raise awareness of the dangers of texting and driving, and we are proud to offer our support."

Through its "It Can Wait" campaign, AT&T is calling on all drivers to go to www.itcanwait.com to take the no-texting-and-driving pledge, and then share their promise with others via Twitter (#itcanwait) and Facebook. The pledge effort is part of the company's public awareness campaign aimed directly at stopping the dangerous practice of texting while driving.

A recent AT&T survey found that 97 percent of teens say they know that texting is dangerous. The survey also found 75 percent of teens surveyed say that texting while driving is "common" among their friends.

The proclamation states:

WHEREAS: The City of Perkins holds the health and safety of its teenagers and adults as a chief concern; and WHEREAS: Through ItCanWait.com, Facebook, text-to-pledge, tweet-topledge and events, more than 1.8 million people have committed to never text and drive; and WHEREAS: 98 percent of American commuters know sending a text or email while driving is not safe; and WHEREAS: Nearly 50 percent of commuters text while behind the wheel; and WHEREAS: More than 40 percent of commuters who text while driving reported the activity as being a habit; and WHEREAS: A driver that sends a text message while driving not only jeopardizes his or her safety, but also the safety of passengers, pedestrians, and other drivers.

NOW, THEREFORE, The City of Perkins Commission does hereby proclaim September 19, 2013 as: "Drive 4 Pledges Day - September 19, 2013"

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand to be affixed this 19th day of September 2013.

Robert Johnson, Mayor
