8/16/2013 10:33:00 AM Get your entries in for Perkins Old Settler's Day
Perkins' annual Old Settlers' Day parade will feature "Red Dirt Roads Leading You Home" as its parade theme this year.
Plans for the event, set for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, are gearing up, according to event coordinator Lanae DeMuth.
The day will get started with the Pistol Pete 5K and one mile Fun Run, which begins at 8 a.m. in downtown Perkins. Registration opens at 6:30 a.m. that day, but anyone interested in running or walking the course is encouraged to get their entry forms in early. Forms are available on the Perkins Community Chamber of Commerce website. A wide variety of vendor booths will once again be part of the Old Settlers' Day festivities. Shoppers will find everything from crafts to jewelry at vendor booths along Main Street and in a large tent on West Thomas Street.
As always, you won't have to walk far to find baked goods, burgers and hot dogs, and lots of other snacks. Vendor booths will be open at 9 a.m. The Old Settlers' Day parade will begin at 11 a.m. DeMuth said the parade marshal will be Betty Harper, longtime Perkins resident and bus driver for Perkins- Tryon Schools.
Parade entrants will be lined-up beginning at 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for several categories. The fun continues after the parade with more entertainment, vendor activities, and a concert by Jason Savory at 1:30 p.m. "We'll also be coordinating with the school for a children's coloring contest," DeMuth said, And prizes will be awarded to winners of the contest."
