It was a rainy day as I set out about "taking care of my do list."
I did get good news that my eyes were healed from the surgery. The other good news is that the swelling in my leg is not from another blood clot.
After a short trip to the store and a snack, I watched Dancing With the Stars. This time the "stars" shared a defining moment in their lives. It was stunning and filled with tears, joy, love and hope.
It is midnight. I searched the Internet for some hope for the world, and our government shut down.
I learned from the site called Treasury Direct that as of 10/10/13 the debt held by the Public was $11,930,980,640,872.43; Intragovernmental Holdings were $4,816,441,217,630.81 and the Total Public Debt Outstanding was $16,747,421,858,503.24.
CNN brought me these top stories: Roman skulls were unearthed in London. The Egyptian death toll was rising. The Nobel Peace Prize for economics was awarded to 3 Americans. Dozens of people were killed in the wave of bombings across Iraq and it was 66 degrees in Georgia.
I don't know how we got in all this mess. I do know that running the government is like not checking the veggie bin in the refrigerator, letting your laundry or garbage pile up.... sooner or later the "ripe odor" will get your attention.
That is where we are right now. Few offices are open to take care of the needs of its citizens. Social security cases are pending, and there are glitches in the Food Stamp program. The food banks shelves are becoming bare. The programs usually funded for the elderly, disabled and handicapped are facing shut downs, and our veterans need the help we promised them.
Yet, we still can't sit at the table and talk in Washington. Time is up for us to make the decisions needed to keep America alive and working. On my desk is a one dollar bill. On one side it says, "In God We Trust." On the other it has a picture of President Washington. I wonder when the last time was that we looked at our currency.
We are the voices of our nation. Call, write, or email those who represent our nation.
In Revelation 3 these words stayed with me until the early hours: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.
To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with my Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
My prayer for all of us is that we take these words seriously. We need quiet time to feel Holy in His presence. He created this world and He is coming back. We are the stewards of all that He has given us.
