In a short ceremony during Bank SNB's recent board of directors meeting, Ruth Cavins, Executive Director of the Oklahoma WONDERtorium, presented the first Oklahoma WONDERtorium "Visionary Awards" to three individuals and Bank SNB as an institution.
"Visionary Awards" are given in appreciation to those who support the museum through their sincere desire to see the WONDERtorium succeed. Rex Horning and Katrina Jarvis, Bank SNB employees, and Russ Teubner, Chairman of the Board for Southwest Bancorp BANKSNB, received individual "Visionary Awards."
In her presentation, Ms. Cavins commented, "On behalf of the Oklahoma WONDERtorium Board of Directors, volunteers, staff members and visitors, it is my honor and great privilege to recognize Bank SNB for supporting the dream that has become an award-winning, record-breaking reality."
Beginning in 2008, Bank SNB committed anunprecedented donation of $100,000 over a 5-year period to jumpstart the expansion of the Stillwater Children's Museum into the Oklahoma WONDERtorium. With Bank SNB's initial investment, the Oklahoma WONDERtorium staff and community volunteers developed a grassroots capital campaign drive that successfully turned that $100K gift into $900,000-plus, effectively opening the museum's first brick and mortar facility on October, 15, 2011.
"We hoped and prayed to have 13,000 visitors in our first year of operation," said Cavins. "We had 46,000! In year two, we cautiously anticipated a decline in attendance, but instead, we just celebrated our second birthday and our attendance since opening stands at 94,825 visitors."
"The diligence and dedication of Rex Horning, Katrina Jarvis and Russ Teubner were also instrumental in contributing to our success," Cavins continued. "Their visionary leadership provided the heart (Katrina), courage (Rex) and intellect (Russ) as an "Oz-like" trifecta that guided our actions."
Today, the Oklahoma WONDERtorium employs 5 full-time staffers and twenty-plus part-time workers. The WONDERtorium's membership program includes 400 families from the north-central region of Oklahoma and the museum operates at a higher percentage of earned income vs. contributed support than the national average.
Statewide recognition has also come the Oklahoma WONDERtorium's way in the form of the prestigious "Redbud Award" for outstanding new attraction presented in 2013 by the Oklahoma Travel Industry Association. Additionally, Frontier Marketing Association honored the WONDERtorium as "2013 Outstanding Attraction" among Oklahoma's twelve central counties.
