The Life Center Caregiver Support Group will be offering a meeting on Wednesday October 16th from 11:45-1:00. Our guest speaker will be Valerie Bloodgood from Judith Karmen Hospice. She will be speaking about "Caregiver Resources." The event will be held at the Center (located inside the First Christian church, 411 W. Mathews). Lunch will be provided for the event by Sterling House Assisted Living in Stillwater, Ok .
This program was part of the caregiver education and Support Group that the LIFE Center offers as part of its services. The support group was started in April of 2001 by Center Director Jane Carlson. A caregiver is any person who is responsible for the well being of another person. The support group provides a twice monthly meeting place for anyone who is providing direct or indirect care for an individual because of frailty, illness or disability. The group provides an opportunity for caregivers to voice their problems, frustrations, and concerns, as well as share information and successes.
Members of the group also receive support and ideas from other caregivers facing the same or similar issues. Some of these issues may include legal issues, finding respite, personal care, role reversal, medication administration, exercise, activities, hearing and vision impairment, and routine changes. The support group provides education on diseases and disabilities, information on resources and social support, and gives caregivers a chance to laugh as well learn how to find the time to take care of themselves.
The support group meets on the second Wednesday of every month at The LIFE Center in the First Christian Church, 411 W. Mathews, in Stillwater from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Informal group discussion is the format of the group, with speakers scheduled occasionally to provide information on specific illnesses, local resources, legal issues, or caregiver related services.
The meetings and presentations are free and open to the public. Sandwiches, chips, drinks and cookies are provided by the Sterling House of Stillwater for each meeting. The LIFE Center can also provide respite care at no cost during the support group if arrangements are made in advance.
