Lindsley Chairs National FCCLA Board

Dawn Lindsley, Stillwater, assumed the office of chairwoman of the board of directors of the National Family, Career and Community Leaders of America at the recent National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tenn.

Lindsley taught family and consumer sciences and was a Family, Careers and Community Leaders of America adviser in Kansas for 11 years. In June, she began work as the accreditation coordinator in the Technology Services Division of the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education in Stillwater.

"FCCLA is the ultimate leadership experience - unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members," said Denise Morris, Oklahoma FCCLA state adviser. "This is the only career and technical inschool student organization with the family as its central focus.

Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers and communities."

As the national chairwoman, Lindsley will lead the FCCLA board and promote the value of FACS and FCCLA across the nation.

"Many of the problems we deal with in society are issues FACS students and FCCLA members address through their co-curricular activities and programs," she said.

"I believe every student should have the opportunity to participate in our classes, programs, events and competitions. The essential skills for life that students learn will help them to be successful now and in the future."

A recent collaborative study between My College Options and FCCLA shows the top three skills acquired in FACS courses are teamwork, communications skills and career planning.

"As chairwoman, I look forward to sharing the success stories of our students with our stakeholders, the media and legislators," said Lindsley.

Lindsley has served in numerous national, state and local positions.

During the past two years, she was selected for and completed the Association for Career and Technical Education's first cohort of Emerging Leaders and was in the fifth class of National Fellows. She was the first National Fellow from Kansas.

President-elect of the Kansas Council of Career and Technical Education Administrators, Lindsley relinquished the position when she took the position in Oklahoma.

She is also past president of the Kansas Association of Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences Educator of the Year and was the 2007 Kansas Outstanding New CTE Teacher of the Year.

Lindsley's community involvement includes being a member of the Kansas State University Leadership for Life steering committee for the university's Leadership Studies alumni, serving on the Flint Hills Financial Literacy Council and being actively involved in 4-H activities.
