Edna Gladys Jungers

Edna Gladys Jungers was born February 4, 1916 in Batavia, Wisconsin to Oswald and Augusta Mehlos Voigt. She married Captain Richard Jungers who later became professor of Education at Oklahoma State University.

They married at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey on September 12, 1942. She is survived by her son, Dr. Rick Jungers, his wife JanEtte Jungers of Stillwater and their three children. Matt Jungers of Boston, attending Harvard Business School, is married to Megan Miller Jungers, formerly of Stillwater. They have one daughter Makinleigh. Katie Jungers Cuenin of Houston is married to Ari Cuenin, Federal Judicial Clerk for the U.S. District Court. They have one daughter, Claire. Becca Jungers of Conway, Arkansas is Womens Discipleship Coordinator of Conway KLife. Additional survivors include two sisters-in-laws, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Richard Jungers, and infant son, Dwight, her parents, two brothers and a sister.

Edna attended the Sheboygan County Teachers College, University of Wisconsin and OSU where she completed a B.S. and MS degree in Education with emphasis in reading. She continued her education in School Administration. Edna served on the staff of Stillwater Public Schools 21 years as a classroom teacher, elementary principal, Director of the Reading Improvement Program, Director of Elementary Education and Assistant Superintendent. She provided public service for the Payne County Sheltered Workshop, Big Brother and Big Sister Program, Mayors Community Service Committee and Payne County Youth Services.

Edna assisted in writing curriculum guides and periodicals for the State Department of Education and contributed to reading workshops for OSU, Phillips University and many Oklahoma cities. She presented programs on reading at eight International Reading Association conventions in the U.S. and Vienna, Austria.

Edna held offi ces in many professional organizations including the O k l a h o m a Reading Council and International Reading Association. She was elected to honorary memberships in Delta Kappa Pi and Phi Kappa Phi. She served as president of Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Kappa lota, Phi Mu Alumni, the OSU College Education Alumni Board and Stillwater Women's Club. Edna was also active in the First united Methodist Church of Stillwater, OEA, Payne County and Oklahoma Retired Educators, AARP, Altrusa, Lahoma, Porcelain Artists of Stillwater and Oklahoma, Phi Mu Social Sorority, GN Chapter of PEO, and B&PW.

Edna's many honors include Beta Sigma Phi Woman of the Year, Volunteer Service award for Payne County Retired Educators, Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award and Phi Mu National Outstanding Achievement Award for Community Service.

Much of Edna's volunteer service has been with the Pleasant Valley School project. This is an old one room school from 1899 that was renovated to provide one day sessions for fourth grade classes. Edna was a founding member of the Board of Directors, planned curriculum, obtained authentic educational materials, trained docents, scheduled classes and taught. She has been a major fund raiser for the school endowment fund. She also tutored local and international students, volunteered at the Stillwater Medical Center, oil painted on canvas and porcelain, enjoyed playing bridge and caring for her grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
